Frequently Asked Questions
What is fermentation?
Fermentation is a natural process where microorganisms like bacteria and yeast convert sugars into beneficial acids, gases, or alcohol. It's how we create delicious foods like yoghurt, bread, and beer. Our sessions are focused on lacto-fermentation which produces tangy, probiotic rich foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi.
Where are your sessions held?
We’re based in Bristol, UK, and host sessions at various venues across the city. You can find and book our Fermentation Fundamental events on Yuup. For private bookings, we’re happy to travel for the right event—just reach out to discuss your needs.
How long do the sessions last? Should i wear anything specific?
Our fermentation sessions run for 1.5 to 2 hours. No you don’t need to wear anything specific, just be ready to roll your sleeves up and get your hands in and amongst it. We are on our feet for a portion of the session so wearing comfy shoes is advised.
What should I bring?
You only need to bring a clean glass jar (750ml to 1L capacity) that you can ideally fit your hand into. We’ll provide everything else you need.
Do I need any prior experience?
Not at all! Our sessions are designed to be accessible for everyone, especially those who found science class a bit of a slog at school. We focus on practical, easy-to-follow methods without overwhelming you with too much science.
What types of events do you cater to?
In addition to our open and bookable sessions on Yuup, we offer private bookings for corporate events, birthdays, stag and hen parties, and more. If you’ve got an idea for an event, get in touch on via the private sessions page—we’d love to help make it memorable!
What can I do with fermented food once it’s ready?
Fermented foods are incredibly versatile! You can enjoy them with salads, in sandwiches, stews, fried rice, or as a condiment. Our personal favourites include adding them to a cheese toastie, or mixing them into onion bhajis. Get creative and experiment—there’s no wrong way to enjoy them!
How can I book a private session?
To arrange a private session, simply fill in the form on our private sessions page. Give us as many details as you can, including dates, location, and any special requirements.
Can children attend the sessions?
Our sessions are generally aimed at adults, but older children and teens accompanied by an adult are welcome. If you’re planning a family-friendly private event, let us know, and we can discuss tailoring the session accordingly.
Do you provide online sessions?
Currently, we’re focused on in-person workshops. However, if that’s something you’re keen to do, we’d love to hear from you. Fill in the form on our private sessions page and we can start arranging.
Do you cater to dietary preferences or allergies?
Yes, we do our best to accommodate dietary needs and allergies. Please let us know in advance if you have any specific requirements, so we can make suitable adjustments.
